Start an around the world reading challenge with a few places you choose. You need not read every nation. Add each place and its two-letter ISO 3166 code to this sheet. Use the linked ISO guide to check the code.

Add the book, author and evidence for its main setting. Use a checked two-letter place code under your chosen scope, then confirm the setting source. Only distinct confirmed codes enter the total. You can keep an uncertain book in the table without turning an uncertain setting into a completed place.

Check the around the world reading challenge setting rule

For this world project, record what the novel or publisher actually says about the main setting. A writer's nationality does not settle that setting. A book by a French author could take place elsewhere. Save a passage reference or publisher URL beside the place you decide to count.

Choose how to count a story set in several countries. You could use the place where most of the action occurs. Write that rule in your notes. If the main setting is unclear, leave its box unchecked. Keep the book as an open entry.

You can choose an author-origin rule instead. Write that choice down first. Check the author's own life account or statement. A name alone is not proof of where someone is from.

ISO codes can cover areas as well as countries. Copy the name and code from your source and note the date. A place code does not settle a dispute about who governs a place. This sheet takes no side in such disputes.

Check place codes with ISO 3166 country and area code guidance. Look up a current code there. The download has blank rows for your choices, rather than a copied ISO list.

FAQ

Can I count a place I have already used?

Two novels entered with the same confirmed place code contribute one place. The extra novel can remain a useful reading record. To check a paper total, list the different confirmed codes on a separate line and count that shorter list, rather than counting all finished-book rows.

What if I cannot confirm a setting?

Leave an uncertain setting unconfirmed. You can read a publisher synopsis or find a direct setting passage without guessing from a cover, an author name or a language. If that evidence remains unclear, the row can stay in your project while another book supplies a verified place.
