Rifa'a Rafi' al Tahtawi (1801-1873) was born in the village of Tahta, Sohag, the same year the French troops evacuated Egypt. He was an Azharite recommended by his teacher and mentor Hassan El-Attar to be the chaplain of a group of students Mohammed Ali was sending to Paris in 1826. Many student missions from Egypt went to Europe in the early 19th century to study arts and sciences at European universities and acquire technical skills such as printing, shipbuilding and modern military techniques. According to his memoir Rihla (Journey to Paris), Tahtawi studied ethics, social and political philosophy, and mathematics and geometry. He read works by Condillac, Voltaire, Rousseau, Montesquieu and Bézout among others during his séjour in France. First edition, four volumes, 1909-1920, Washington. Overall very good condition in original bindings. Notable for the complete absence of library or ownership markings. The only marking I can find is an old pencil note on the front blank of volume 3. Includes bound in errata slips and a promotional leaf for the series laid in. The boards have some dings to the corners. Volume 3 has the most condition issues: shows the most outer wear with some stains on the edges and wear on spine and boards (see scans). Bindings are all sound, which I expect can be an issue with this heavy set. A quite decent usable set. Please see scans of the books you will receive.

Robert Morris was an important American Freemason poet who is chiefly remembered for creating the Order of the Eastern Star. He composed over 400 poems most of which dealt with the Eastern Star and Freemasonry. He voyaged to the Holy Land and wrote hymns and poems based on his experiences there. He also published a book describing his sights and discoveries in Syria, Palestine, and Egypt entitled 'Freemasonry in the Holy Land' which featured many of his poems and odes.

Suite of 109 fine plates illustrating native costumes from around the world, copied from 18th century travel books.All copperplates within gold-lined frames under tissue guards, engraved by J. Laroque after a design by Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur. This is an early prospectus with 36 parts and 109 plates showing samples from all volumes of the proposed set: Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. The prospectus or "Programme et Plan de l'Ouvrage" appears at the front, and the title page midway through the volume. The complete set was to comprise 48 parts with six plates each in four volumes (288 plates) beginning from 1 August 1792. It was eventually published in 1795-96 in Paris and included some 433 plates in four volumes.The literary part was to be written by Jean-Francois Cornu. 1860 Arctic Boat Journey Isaac Hayes Exploration 2nd Grinnell Expedition KANE

Henry Grinnell's second arctic expedition was a 19th-century Elisha Kent Kane voyage which, in 1853, set out to find John Franklin and his lost expedition. Kane, along with other crew on the USS Advance never found Franklin but were able to gather a lot of information about people, geography, and natural history of the Arctic region, a relatively unknown region of the world. The discoveries found on this voyage include the Humboldt Glacier, Kennedy Channel, the Kane Basin, and reaching the farthest north of any exploration at the time.

Expedition surgeon Isaac Hayes published his own account of the voyage, published under the title "An Arctic Boat Journey".
