Dating from July 31, 1944 - July 5, 1945, typed single space (one letter is typed at one and a half spaces) on thin, air mail paper. Three of the letters are two pages, and the rest are one page each. One letter is signed “Dash,” and the rest in pen and in pencil as “SDH.” There are a few small corrections in Hammett’s hand and an occasional note in Mrs. Whitfield’s, who was married to Hammett’s friend and hard-boiled writing colleague, Raoul Whitfield. The document goes into great detail on all specifics, effectively giving MGM control over his creative output past and present. Hammett's writing skill had failed him by this time. Although, he did manage to finish his final 144 page screen outline for "Another Thin Man." Kiesling with all good wishes / Dashiell Hammett Hollywood Nov 5. 1934." Kiesling was Publicity Director for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. A near fine copy, lacking the dust jacket, with a small stain on the front board cloth, lightly worn head and foot. Things happened very quickly for the acclaimed crime writer with his final novel The Thin Man. First published in Collier's in December 1933, it was in book form the following month, and was released as a hit MGM movie that May with William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora.

To Prudence Whitfield, wife of Raoul Whitfield, a fellow "Black Mask" writer and one of Hammett's closest friends. Hammett and Prudence (Pru) shared a wealth of correspondence and many are written, signed or addressed in a manner that feed the speculation that they were lovers, even while he was in a relationship with Lillian Hellman. Our letter is addressed to "Pru darling" and signed, "Much love, sweetheart..." with initials "SDH." Hammett talks about the letters he had received from her, of which there were many. She apparently wrote daily at that time. He also talks about it being winter in Alaska, saying, "We're a pretty white world." He comments on life in the Army and about writing. "Of my own affairs in the Army there isn't a single God-damned bit of news," but notes that "sitting here at ease in my newspaper hut, putting on a little weight and practically bloated with health, I've no trouble being phlegmatic about it all.
