Mary Stuart was a 16th-century Queen of Scotland who, as a Catholic, was at adds with the Protestant Reformation sweeping through Scotland and England. After being imprisoned by Protestant officials, she abdicated her throne in favor of her son James VI (a Protestant), who would eventually become King of Scotland and of England.

Mary wrote countless letters to prominent European royals, nobles, and bishops include Philip II of Spain, Queen Elizabeth of England, Charles IX of France, Catherine de Medici, John Knox, and so many others.
