Description

1915 EXQUISITE King Candaules Ancient Lydians King Gyges Herodotus Ltd Gautier

Theophile Gautier was a 19th-century French author known for his romantic style in his poems and novels. One of his work was "King Candaules" – a narrative of the life of the 7th-century BC king of the Lydians. Most of the known information on Candaules comes from famed Greek historian Herodotus who discusses his royal lineage and father Meles, his assassination and subsequent dethronement by Gyges, as well as many of the magical and mythical topics hinted at in his life.

Gautier's "King Candaules" is a fine 19th-century example of modern portrayals of ancient literature and should be considered reliable as Gautier pulled directly from Herodotus. Note that this exceedingly rare 20th-century printing is adorned with full-page color illustrations from the artwork of Paul Avril. Limited edition numbered no. 10 of 75.
