Description

1790 AUSTRALIA 1ed Voyage New South Wales Botany Bay Illustrated Phillip Cook

In 1770, Captain James Cook first landed in Botany Bay, Australia – a voyage that would have lasting impact on future European excursions. In 1788, Arthur Phillip arrived at Botany Bay hoping, not only to bring prisoners to Australia, but also to establish permanent colonies after Cook's initial arrival. The voyage not only intended to set up permanence at Botany Bay but also at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island, all of which are discussed in Phillip's voyage memoir, "Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay". This book is now considered to be most authoritative account of the beginning of Australia.

This 1790 Dublin edition of Phillip's account includes numerous full-page engravings – views of Botany Bay and Port Jackson, natives in their huts and canoes, and numerous navigational charts.
